Integrated Research Application System

About

Web-based solution for Health and Social Care Research

Web Application

IRAS is an advanced national system for storage of clinical research applications data. It is used for applying for permissions and approvals for health and social care/community care research in the UK. As a web portal, which acts as a single point of entry for study data, IRAS generates all the forms that researchers and authorized bodies need in order to obtain approvals for their study to open in the NHS.

The system allows professionals to enter the information about their project once instead of duplicating information in separate application forms. It uses filters to ensure that the collected data is appropriate to the type of study, and consequently the permissions and approvals required. Last but not least, the system helps you to meet regulatory and governance requirements.

Full Project Dataset

Instead of filling in a number of forms each for a relevant review body, the Full Set of Project Data provides one place to add all of the information about your project. IRAS will then simultaneously populate all of the forms that you need. Completing the Full Set of Project Data will also fill in large parts of the site-specific information forms.

E-Submission

Applications to some review bodies are submitted electronically. If this is the case for you, then there will be an E-submission tab on your form, which allows you to submit your application form and all supporting documentation directly from IRAS to the relevant review body. IRAS allows you to transfer the Full Set of Project Data (or individual forms) to other users as well.

Authorisations

All applications for research approvals / permissions need formal sign off. Authorisations and declarations from investigators, radiation experts, sponsor representatives, academic supervisors etc. will be required on most forms for a submission to be considered valid. For applications to NHS RECs, electronic authorisation is now mandatory, and many other review bodies now encourage or require the use of electronic authorisation as an alternative to providing hard copy/written signatures.

Solution & Results

The system allows professionals to enter the information about their project once instead of duplicating information in separate application forms. It uses filters to ensure that the collected data is appropriate to the type of study, and consequently the permissions and approvals required. Last but not least, the system helps you to meet regulatory and governance requirements.

To reduce complexity of the existing software data management options, our development team created options for extensive system documentation. The applied filters help users make sure that the data they have collected is relevant to the type of the study and applies to permissions and approvals required. To save time and to eliminate risks, the system was updated in a way that enables users to enter study information and specifics once without having to duplicate the same information in separate application forms.

To further speed up the process of collecting authorizations, we included functionality that allows declarations to be electronically authorized.

BGO Software and HRA (Health Research Authority) teams managed to successfully release more than 15 new versions of both HARP and IRAS during the contract period while meeting agreed SLAs and KPIs.

The applied updates resulted in the ability to support the software with fewer members of staff while retaining the ability to apply changes at the same rate. Which, in return, led to direct cost savings that are reflected in our resource plan.
